Is putting the front tire of a bicycle best when replacing the rear?

i got a brand new mitchellen* bicycle tire cuz my rear tire is worn out, my dad said to put the new one on the rear, the front tire is a specialized, should i listen to my dad?

Hmmm!

The rear tyre will wear faster than the front, so there is some sense in what your dad says, but dont have a dodgy front tyre as they are harder to control if you encounter a puncture.

Hope this helps
Listen to your dad, he's right
Rear tires are more of a pain to change than front tires, so that is my deciding factor.

However, front tires with some good tread may prevent you from loosing control on sandy surfaces.

Good rear tires help with better traction when climbing hills with loose traction.

so you decide.
If you're actually riding this bike off road, put the new tire on the front. Steering and front end braking are much more important than traction. If not, then it doesn't really matter unless the front tire is worn past the tread.
As others have mentioned, what you do partly depends on the type of riding you do.

Putting the new tire on the front, and moving the front tire to the rear will help you reduce the number of tires you have to replace.

The rear tire will wear faster (sheldon brown says 3 to 1) than the front tire, primarily because there is more weight on the rear tire.

If you do a lot of off road riding, you'll want knobby tires to increase your friction on sand and dirt / mud trails.

If you are riding in the road, slick tires are best for improved wear, and lowered rolling resistance.

nice intro to choosing tread based on what you ride:

go on a single track and see if you have good front traction cuz that is one of the things the front tire does (traction in steering) if you feel it is OK so leave it on if not so get a new one
