Bike braking and screeching problem?

when i brake on my bike, sometimes it causes a screeching sound. Anyone know what's the problem and how to fix?

Yeah,

Do you have discs or pads?

If pads - they are not toed in properly. this means that the rear of the pad is likely hitting the rim first, letting air get trapped under the pad between the rim, and causing a screeching. If you toe them in (so the front of the pad slightly hits the rim first) your problem should be fixed. Also try cleaning the rim and pad with rubbing alcohol and light sandpaper.

If discs - likely dirty. Cleand the pads and rotors with rubbing alcohol and sandpaper. Be warned though, afterwards, braking will suck like with new pads and rotors, until about 20 really hard stops. Also some discs just make noise because of the material of the pads. you can buy some that reduce this though...

First check that your brake blocks are parrallel to the wheel rim and and when they are applied the mate diectly with the rim and not hang below or rub on the tyre!

Also check for wear on both the block and the rim, replace if necessary!

If it still squeals after you have checked the above, then you can always buy different brake blocks(may be a different compound will help)

EDIT: I didn't go into mentioning toe-in of the brake pads, as I've found that's rarely the cause, I only said parrallel because, I didnt want to bamboozle a beginner.
The front edge of the brake pad should touch the rim just before the back edge... the front edge is the one facing forward.

If the rear edge hits first or if it is contacting the rim all at once you'll either get a screech or a shudder.

Simply loosen the pads, tilt them so the front of the pad is inwards towards the rim, and retighten.
