Do you think it's fair? Cycling on Pavements...?

In the UK it is illegal to cycle on pavements and you can face a fine of up to 拢500. I don't think it's that's fair.

Im new to cycling and I not fully confident cycling on a pavement yet let along cycling on a road. And of course I don't think you should cycle on small or busy streets, but that's just common sense.

But I don't think their is anything wrong with people cycling on large pavements. No one's gonna die or anything, unless something truly aweful and weird happened. what do you think....

Hey,

I work in a bike shop in Canada (pavements called sidewalks), and I'll tell you - I see more bikes from crashes from people riding on the sidewalk than on the road.

you move faster than a pedestrian, and people in cars only look for pedestrians when turning, backing up, opening doors, etc...

My recommendation would be to bike on the road where there are not many cars, and wider roads. if you come to a road that makes you too nervous - just bike on the sidewalk, if you get stopped, I'm sure they'll be understanding

In fact the other day I flew by 3 bike cops biking on the sidewalk while on the road (it is illegal where I live)

With practice - it'll come to you. just remember, you are a vehicle, so if you want respect from cars, stop at the stop signs and lights, use signals, etc...

Good luck Source(s): work in a bike shop
Cycling should be done with other vehicles, in the road. While one may not necessarily kill a person, it's quite easy to injure or maim on the pavements.

Sidewalks / pavements are for pedestrians. Your speed likely be at least 3 times that of pedestrians. In addition, entrances to shops (driveways?) and intersections are much more dangerous for cyclists, even more so when cycling in pedestrian facilities.

Better places to practice are grassy parks and parking lots with a slight incline.

Here is the: particular law:
54: You MUST NOT cycle on a pavement. Do not leave your cycle where it would endanger or obstruct road users or pedestrians, for example, lying on the pavement. Use cycle parking facilities where provided.
Laws HA 1835 sect 72 & R(S)A sect 129
UK highway code:

it's also restricted here in the US, but I do it sometimes. When I see there aren't many people on the sidewalk (maybe 5-10 people) I ride on the sidewalk. When it gets more crowded I move onto the road. Remember: If you see children, stop, or get off the sidewalk. Children are very unpredictable, they can't see you, and it's hard to dodge them since they usually run to the direction you dodge in. If you see little children on bikes. It's even more dangerous and you must avoid it
Kids, dogs, driveways? Sidewalks/pavements are far more dangerous for a cyclist than the street.
