Shimano Deore LX Rapidfire Shifters Stuck?

Hi there,

I've just purchased a second hand Rockhopper Comp with Shimano Deore LX Rapidfire Shifters. Trouble is, they only seem to work for one thumb press? I can only shift from the granny ring to the middle ring, and only use the last 4 gears on the back.

I've checked all the mech stops, and they're fine, it's like the shifters aren't using the rachet over the full throw. Bikes been sat up for two years and everything was seized solid.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I'm a Gripshifter, personally, but working on friends' bikes I've found two things to look for on these crappy Shimano trigger shifters. Seems to happen more often with the Deore than with the LX.

1) Open the cover and check to see that the jam nut hasn't loosened. If it has, you can tighten it, but it's a tricky tension and it's best to get a new shifter. They don't seem to stay tight.

2) Hit the moving parts briefly with a shot of WD-40 (yes, WD-40 is ok for once) or a light spray lube. Dribbling an oil is ok but hasn't worked as well for me. Sometimes the grease they use dries out and impedes the function of the internals.

Edit: Also, since you said the bike was in storage for a long time, it might be wise to replace the cables and housing. If they've rusted inside, or if they were lubed with something and it's gotten gummy, no amount of derailleur/shifter tuning will make them work right and consistently.
undo the mech stops
undo the cables and re tension them
then re adjust the mech stops
make sure the thumb shift is in the lowest setting

on the front derailleur there are two screws find the one that has the letter L or says low and open it 3 full turns to opening direction then try to shift, if it does shift but you need to use power then open the same screw 1.5 more to opening direction, if that doesn't do it so do 1 more full turn, if even that doesn't help go to a bike shop and get the gears tuned
You have Shimano for your shifters, but what brand derailleur is being used? If they are SRAM you have a compatibility problem due to the different pull ratio. SRAM uses a 1:1 and Shimano uses a 2:1

Take the chain off and do the following test;
1) When you are shifting up and down does the cable ever go slack? if no,Sounds like the nylon gear and/or the ratcheting pawl in the shifter is damaged. Being it was seized, if the shift lever was pressed too hard the pawls leading edge can be damaged causing all sorts of strange shifting action.
2)If yes, when you were checking the travel limits and the derailleur was able to go from limit to limit did the derailleur move freely and move with no assistance, if yes go back to item #1, If no, the derailleur either has a bind in it or the return spring is shot.
the problem is probally in the cable system if you have not put on new cable and housing change them or at least get some good lube into them to help them slide easier such as triflow
