I have a trek 3900 and by the gears there is a plastic disk the seperates the gears from the spokes read on?

and it is broken does it do anything do i need to get it fixed

Just break it off the rest of the way. The only reason bikes still have them on is because the buying public expects to see them.

Spoke protectors, or "pie plates" as they used to be called when they were metal, stopped the chain from getting fouled in the spokes when derailleur overshifting was typically the "rule of the day". Now, derailleurs are so refined and precise that they aren't necessary unless your derailleur is wildly out of adjustment. Source(s): 27 years in the industry
u should cut that thing off anyway, it can only slow you down with needless weight
Nope in fact, you're better off without it!

Enjoy the weight decrease and ride free!!
If your rear d茅railleur is good, and does not overshift, then you do not need to replace the plastic disk. If you are constantly having to put the chain back on, and you've adjusted the d茅railleur, then the plastic disk is relatively cheap way, rather than buying a new d茅railleur.
well take it off but for a very short time (1-4 rides) the chain might fall off the smallest gear but don't think something is wrong it is OK the same thing happened to me on my bike
The disk is not a grease guard, it's a spoke protector. It's to protect the spokes from damage if you overshift your big cog and the chain drops into the spokes. If you keep your bike adjusted correctly, it is not needed. Look around at other bikes, performace riders will not have them on. Newbies will.
