Is crossing the interstate on a bicycle seriously frowned upon, a little frowned upon, or just plain illegal? |
If you want the ten points, give your experience in this area, and or some web info. If the crossing is at a "level" crossing ... meaning a county road that meets on the same grade as the interstate AND that the interstate does not have a median AND that the interstate is not more than 2 lanes each direction ... you CAN cross the interstate, because it is a continuation of the county road. If the crossing does not happen at a "level" crossing, it falls into the category of riding on a controlled-access roadway, and is definitely illegal. The same illegal nature occurs if it's a section of road that isn't open to the public yet ... nice smooth pavement, but a bad scene as far as dealing with the local police. If the crossing is made via an overpass or underpass, then cross all you want ... you're not interrupting the high-speed traffic on the interstate, you're simply cruising along the county or municipal roadway. Source(s): Cyclist and advocate for Texas Bike Coalition (dealing with lawmakers for state of Texas and Texas Department of Transportation) i dont think it is at all illegal or frowned upon, i dont see why you couldn't! wait, is an interstate a highway?, if it is then yes, its totally illegal! Suicidal and illegal too. In Colorado whenever they have those "Ride the Rockies" bike marathons, they ride on the interstate, in fact they actually block the interstate, making driving very difficult for the cars. illegal. illegal. |
