How do you "break in" your butt so that you can ride a bike for more than 5 minutes without pain? Short of actually riding longer and more frequently to get your body used to it, I'd suggest the following: If you're experiencing pain after just five minutes, you may want to look into a very different bike seat, or look into some biking pants, or both. Each week, I ride a road bicycle over 100 miles, 64 miles of which are done in one sitting, as it were. I wear proper bike shorts with chamois padding in the butt and crotch area, and I have a standard race bike seat, which is thinner in height than that of a mountain bike, hybrid, or cruiser. It's also possible that your seat is too low relative to your bike size, handlebar height, and your physical dimensions. The result would be that you are putting far too much pressure on the nerves in your groin/butt area and therefore causing discomfort. For simplicity and ease's sake, try one or all of the ideas I listed above. Otherwise, I'd suggest going to a proper bike shop and have them "fit" you on your bike. Hope this helps! you have to go on several long trips and suck it up before that happens. LOL, this is why my bike has been hanging in my garage for three years. Ride. Every day. Consider getting a better saddle, and riding shorts. 1. make sure the seat height and tilt are correct for you. The seat should be close to the flat position. If your saddle is too high it will cause you to rock in the saddle this will be painful after a ride or two. 2. ride often, every day if possible for only a few miles. this will help you "work" into your saddle. 3. as you become accustom to it may take several weeks or 15 rides or so if you are brand new to biking start riding longer like you would like. 4. Finally, not all saddles work for all people. I use racing type saddles with little padding and narrow. I've been looking for a new saddle this year, I had to try 4 to find the one I wanted. While all the other saddles were $70+ as well, one HURT, 2 others were OK and one felt good. Hope this helps. I suggest talking to someone at your Local Bike Store (LBS). The seat geometry can help quite a bit. I started off riding on a soft seat and the first 5 minutes were always pleasant, but the next 10 were all pain. Then there was a Specialized brand seat on sale and I couldn't resist it's looks - I know, wrong reasons, but it worked. I accidentally came across a seat that works for me. The bike brand Specialized did a lot of research in seat comfort (and health effects). If you choose a seat that is the exact width that corresponds to your "bum-bones", then you will always rest your body on those "bum-bones" and it will not hurt as much. Sucking it up, as many have advised, is only a good idea if you have the right seat. Otherwise pain on the bike while riding can ruin the fun. Good luck. Edit: Another idea would be to get a pair of cycling shorts with padding. They look weird, as all non-cycling people would say, but they are really great for what they do. Comfort first, right? Had the same problem 3 years ago. |
