Does biking do anything for your core? |
Does biking do anything for your core? It does little for your core. You do use every muscle in you body when you cycle. If you ride hard, do hills, mountain bike far more so then just cruising around the block. For some reason some people think cycling is a great core and/or upper body work out - it's just not true. For example go ride a hard 10 miles. Get off your bike are you abs tired or burning? How about your legs? Now do 3 sets of 50 sit-ups or crunches - now do they burn? You body tells you what your working - legs and butt. Of couse your core and arms support you but this is quite secondary. Also an important factor is you move your torso and arms little when riding. It's far better to exercise muscles with a full range of motion. Simply put does you core get a work out - to a minor degree yes. Source(s): Ex personal trainer, racer and life long cyclist. Most definitely, especially if you are climbing. yes yes.. your thighs abs, and arms MTBing more so than road cycling. Unfortunately, cycling is not a good form of exercise for your core. The catch-22 is that a good core improves your riding, especially climbing. But, you really need to augment your fitness regimen with additional exercises for the core. For workout ideas, I highly recommend one of Chris Carmichael's fitness guides. https://secure.trainright.com/storefront... |
