On my local bike trail, why do many of the professional bikers seem to be riding single-speed bikes? |
...with thin tires? I thought multi-geared bikes were ideal for sloping terrain (i have an 18-speed) The bike trail is smooth but has number of inclines. I pulled this off the last question I answered about this: Single speeds are somewhat popular with some cyclist. They like the simplicity and uniqueness of it. It requires a wide range of skills to ride successfully. You must be able to pedal in a very wide cadence range, plan you route far ahead of a normal rider, have avoidance strategies to deal with surprises etc. Riding a fixed gear as it's termed, makes you a better cyclist. These bikes are derived from track bikes. You may see several at a certain place because people with like interests like to hang together. I ride a lot but have seen a fixed gear in quite awhile. BTW it's unlikely they are pros. Pros would rarely ride a trail, not enough room and miles. You're seeing club riders or full kit bikers. It ain't what you wear that makes you a cyclist. to build leg strenght and lungs up to max Less things to go wrong with the drive train. |
