What are the doughnuts for on a bicyle?

My bike has nine of them on the wires for the brakes and gear shifters on top of the frame. I heard them called doughnuts once, but just never knew what they were for.

They are for eating... just kidding... they space the cables away from your frame so the paint doesn't get scratched.
Those "doughnuts" are spacers that are used to keep your cables from rubbing on the frame. They should be fairly evenly spaced the length of the tube on each of the cables.
They keep the cables from slapping against the frame and making noise when you hit bumps.
