How do you shift a 18 speed bike?

How do you shift a 18 speed bike?

First thing, you must be pedalling to change gears, the chain must be moving! The left shifter works the front chain rings. The smaller one is easier to pedal (hills) than the large one. Max speed is acheived with the large one. The right shifter works the back cogs. This time the larger is easier. So basically you have 9 gears to use with the small ring in front and another 9 when using the large in the front. 9 + 9 = the 18 speeds. You make most shifts with the right to make minor changes in gear ratio. You will get used to it.
