MTB. Can I use a nine speed cassette with 8 speed shifters? |
I have bought a wheel with a 9 speed cassette. Can my existing 8 speed shifters be used or do I need a 9 speed shifter? yes but you will only have 8 gears, you should upgrade to a 9spd shifter, other wise theres no point putting a 9spd cassette on. You should buy yourself a 9 speed shifter, they cost a few pounds is all, and then you're sorted. You'll also need a 9 speed compatible chain, as 9 speed chains are narrower than 8 speed chains. There's probably a cable re-routing trick that will allow your shifter to work with 8 out of the 9 cogs on that cassette, but it's probably not ideal. You can either break apart the cassette and re-space 8 of the cogs with 8 speed spacers (8 and 9 speed cogs are almost the same thickness), or you can just get a new 8 speed cassette (8 and 9 speed work on the same freehub bodies). No you can't. 7, 8 and 9 speed cassettes all have different spacing from one cog to the next. It will not shift right. You must match the cassettes to the shifters. Simply put the 8 speed cassette from your old wheel on to the new wheel and you're set. If you want nine speeds then buy new shifters. The derailleurs should work fine on both. You may need a nine speed chain too. As the number of gears increases the chains get narrower. I'm not certain on 8 to 9 speed chains there may be little difference anyway. Please note you only really need the rear shifter. Most people buy both to match though. As others have said to use the cassette you will need 9 speed shifters and chain, just swop your existing 8 speed cassette till you can afford the other bits No, You need to have a nine speed shifter to work with the 9 spd cassette. You will also need a 9 spd chain as it is narrower than the 8 spd chain.(gear spacing width) The 8 spd chain will rub on the gear next to it, and will not follow the shifting ramps properly (the grooves cut into the gears). The 8 spd shifter has a different cable pull ratio and will cause overshoot when changing gears therefor requiring a 9 spd shifter. The front derailleur requires no changes. yes but you would have 8 gears |
