Which bike for commuting/pleasure? Cypress DX or 7.2FX? |
The Giant Cypress DX and Trek 7.2FX are both in my price range. I like the comfort of the DX, but it's a little slugish--I like the efficiency of the 7.2FX but it's not quite as comfortable. Which of these is the better buy, and which is better for traveling long distances and commuting to work (without giving up the ability to enjoy a nice weekend ride.) You can read up on people's experiences with these bikes at bikeforums.net Joining is free, then you can do a search for commuters or brands. From what I've read, yes the Giant Cypress is more comfy but slower. Many people who are wanting to ride for fitness choose the Trek FX series. Depends on what you want to do and how much you plan to ride, where you ride, etc. You can always change the seat on the Trek to be more comfortable. Or - you can always change the tires on the Giant to go a little faster. PS - Giant has a new commuter bike out with racks & fenders, the Tran Send or Tran Sport (can't remember the exact names), new for 2008. Of couse it's all up to you. Both bikes will get the job done. The sluggishness is likely due to the sprung fork, which also provides the comfort. It's possible you prefer the seat of the Giant. You could replace the seat of the Trek for additional comfort. I would say you will become very used to the Trek ride and find it very comfortable after you ride it a while. If you ride very poor roads choose the Giant. I personally like the looks of the Trek. If the choice is that close for you pick the one you like the looks of. Between the two, I'd vote for the 7.2 FX purely from a frame standpoint. Trek builds a hell of a frame, and having ridden the 7.3, I'd say it's a pretty nice bike for commuting. Another option you might want to consider is the Bianchi Volpe: it's a cyclocross style roadbike, with drop bars and a steel frame. I use one for touring and summer commuting and it's a fantastic ride. bicycling.com, bikeforums.net |
