Why do we still use tyres and inner tubes on bikes? |
With the development of bikes with suspension, why do we not use wheels with a bouncy ball polymer material in the shape of a tyre. No puncture possible! you could always try inventing one yourself weight My guess: weight, flexibility, customization of tire pressure for different terrain. there are urethane tires the market though... Bouncy ball material - you kidding !?!?! Hit a bump and you'd end up jumping in some poor sods begonias and then top of his car and then on his dog before quite possibly clearing his green house.. Tyres and inner tubes are still used as they are, as of now, the best solution. Yes - weight, poor performance and feel. Also, I ride a MTB hardtail and I'd never think of it on my non-suspension road bike! I hear they are in the works for kid's bikes though. I don't know what we could do to replace tires, but there are now tubless mountain bike tires. One step in the direction you're thinking. i see what you mean a self closing puncture. a memory rubber as it were. it is possible but price and technology for the average consumer dont go hand in hand. thats why professional race bikes are superlight and strong made from space age carbon fibres. |
