Is biking a good form of cardio?

Is biking a good form of cardio?

Cycling is a great cardio work out. You need to follow the prescribed cardio guidelines as with running, swimming etc.

The guidelines are, very simply put, raising your heart rate significantly for a 30 minute + time period 3 times a week minimum. Of course there is much more to it than this but you get the idea. If you tool around the the neighborhood at 10 mph for 5 minutes you are not doing cardio just as running to the fridge for a popcycle is not either.

If your knees bother you cycling is usually a great option over running. In fact cycling is many times prescribed as therapy for certain types of knee problems. Pools aren't always available and many don't offer lap swimming.

Elite cyclists are more or as fit as any athlete in any sport. Finally cycling is so FUN!
Yup! But we call it cycling, not biking.
It is, but it depends on how far you go and how fast! Also how long and often you do it for. But yes, it is usually a method of cardio!
no really? Yeah!!!!!!!
Biking (or cycling, so as to not be confused with motorbiking) is a good form of cardio, depending on the type of riding you do.

If you want cardio only, without needing massive leg strength for climbing hills, you'll have to do a lot of what's called "spinning". Spinning is simply pedaling in lower gears at a rate fast enough to move forward at an acceptable speed, but requiring less leg strength, but better heart condition. The opposite of this is often called "cranking". Cranking is generally pedaling in higher (harder) gears, where you cover the same distance with less pedal strokes, but your legs and your heart work really hard. Cranking will tire you out a lot more quickly, unless you've trained and conditioned for it.

It's probably best to train both ways so you don't get bored, and so you get optimum effect from the training.

All that said, I can tell you from my experiences that jogging is another good cardio training that is completely different from biking. My heart rate can shoot much higher, much more quickly in jogging from what seems to me to be much lesser effort.

You might try getting a heart rate monitor to see how you do in either of these options.
they best in my opinion and a lot of riders in the world
