Losing Weight by Biking? |
Hey all, I just found an 8 mile track from my house and a round a lake, and I biked it yesterday. My legs arent sore which is surprising as I cant bend without having excruciating pain from my knees do to inflammation around both of them. Did I get a seratonin boost? My question is, if I do this 5 times a week for the next two weeks and a half, and eat healthy, will this make me lose more than 5 lbs? What muscles does biking build up? Can it help me lose some mass from my butt area? Ill be doing this for more than two and a half weeks, but I am moving to college and I want to be slimmer before then. Im a 17 yr old guy by the way. Will biking only make me slimmer, or add definition to my lower abdomen or something? Thanks all. Any tips to get more impact out of biking would be greatly appreciated. Biking should slim you down as well as add definition to your legs - quads, hamstrings and calves. Just look at the guys who compete in the Tour de France. Just remember to keep on challenging yourself. If you are just biking, that the muscles you are using will get acclimated to the exercise if you always bike at the same intensity and pace. This translates into less calories burned if you are not challenging your muscles. So, if it's a multi-speed bike, make it harder on yourself and go faster if possible as the weeks progress. Also, something I read about concerning fat burning. Recent research has shown that those who do light to medium cardiovasuclar activity (biking) for two twenty minute session with a rest in between burn over 20% more fat than those who exercise for 40 minutes straight. So trying riding at a brisk pace for 20 minutes - rest for 15 - 20 and then go for another 20 minutes. This will take an hour overall and optimize fat burning. Good luck and have fun. You will lose weight if you get your heart rate up which will burn calories. Bicycling mostly uses your thigh muscles and your butt but you can make it also work your arms and your stomach if you try. Sounds like a good work out. Good luck. I think your baseline is very important here. 2.5 weeks of cycling in summer can cause weight lose. But say you are on a cheeseburger diet it will have minimal impact. Other considerations are how far you ride and how hard you ride. I can tell you for sure that 2 riders doing the same 50 mile ride could get completely different levels of exercise and subsequent workout. Leg muscles, calves/quads will definately grow.... 5 lbs in 20 days is about the max you can hope to lose with bike riding and dieting. While I heard of 2 shorter sessions instead of one longer one being better - I wouldn't bet the farm on it. I believe a 20 min rest inbetween is not what is meant. The idea is you could bike for 30 min for example in the morning or noonish then do it again in the evening. This is supposed to optimize the residual after exercise metabolisim increase. So if you can go only for one session continous biking would likely be better. If you can do 2 sessions at least a few hours apart go for it! Both will do you well! |
