How can I safely secure two bicycles to the top of my car? |
I'm going to a bike trail in a few weeks and I don't know how to safely secure the two bicycles to the top of my car (a 2000 KIA Sportage), any tips or gidelines? And I would also like to know what I should buy to do this (like any ropes or something like that to secure the bikes) best thing to do is invest in a Yakima, Thule, or Rhode Gear bike rack it is worth every penny and will protect your car AND the bikes Thule make a good range of bike racks for all applications. They come complete with all the necessary tie down accessories. There will be no need to buy extra fittings like rope etc. Thule You Could get some of them Bungee Cords (the ones that stetch), and and some very strong rope, and when you put the bikes on the car put one of the Bungee Cords through both handle bars and then hook it to the car, and just do the same thing put the Cord around the middle of the bike(the Frame) and hook them to the car. Hope this helped! personal experience If you're asking can you do this with out a bike rack (not recomended) my friend has. If you don't have roof rails no way jose! My bud turned the bikes upside down for much better stability and tied down each bike in 4 spots to the roof lugage rails: ft. wheel, rear wheel, seat post/rear triangle and head tube. He also tied the ft. wheel to the down tube so the ft. wheel would not turn. He has done this without a problem several times for long (500 mile) trips. |
