Does biking work out the back muscles at all?

Does biking work out the back muscles at all?

Clearly some of the people that have answered this question have never ridden a bicycle.

There's a reason that competitive cyclists do back extensions in the weight room during the off season. It's because your lower back is used extensively during cycling. As a point of reference, we also do squats, leg curls, and crunches. All of these activities are used extensively in cycling, and if you go for a long rides with out having core strength, you'll be sore precise _because_ you're exercising muscle groups that you have previously neglected.

Don't believe me? try these:
Find a long hill, try to ride all the way up in an easy gear while stand on the pedals. Your back will be in agony by the time you get to the top if you haven't done core strength building.

Next, find a long flat straight section of road. Pick two points on the road about 100 feet apart. From a very slow speed, sprint from one point to the next, then slow down to recover. Do this five times, them tell me if your back doesn't hurt the next day.

Lastly, find a course that you can ride at your all out fastest while in the seated position for 30 minutes. It won't be just your legs and lungs that are hurting after that. If you haven't done core work, you'll end up with a wind stitches from weak abs, and back pain from lack of lower back work.

The answerers that said your back hurts because your crouched over are partially correct, But the pain is because you are using your lower back to support your upper body weight. Of course, these people are the same ones who will tell you that cycling doesn't help you get rid of belly fat.well i dont think it does unless you are bending down like the professional racers
Yes, you will burn fat and tighten back muscles. Cycling is an excellent form of cardiovascular exercise so you will burn fat throughout your body and strengthen your heart. Additionally, your entire body is involved in cycling so you work all the muscles, including your back. In spinning classes there are moves lowering down on the bars and back up at intervals that specifically target those muscles as well.
Oh most certainly. all you have to do is one extended hard effort, and the next morning you find out just how much you use your back and shoulders. just went hard tuesday, and my back as been muscle sore since.

I wish more experienced road cyclists would post. anyone that rides hard in training and racing can confirm just how much you use your back. it isnt just strain or something. you use your back as leverage, and the more fit your legs get, the more your back comes into play. ask any road racer and they will tell you the same. yes, you use your back a lot.
Biking doesn't work out your back muscles to any great extent. It does require you to use these muscles but at a minor level, not what would be call a workout. If you never ride and them do 10 miles in a bent over position you will be a little soar in the lower back but this would be due as much to the streching for a long period as the work your back has done.

Biking does work out your legs, butt and cordiovascular system very effectively.

tx_trotter is right. Madmonkey only part right. I've raced MTB and road and done many other sports. As a racer and trainer for a dozen years I have actual knowlege of this.

To put it simply. If you have ridden a good amount of miles to be used to riding moderately for say 10-20 miles try this: Ride a hard 10 mile TT. When you finish this is what you will note: Legs burn, breathing heavily - back, stomach and arms are almost unaffected. It's common sense.

Your whole body needs to help keep your position on a bike all muscles are involved. It's good to work out your core for biking (or any sport) If biking worked out your back so well you wouldn't need to weight train for it off season - get it?
Yes to whatever degree you utilize your back muscles while riding.
