Self sealing tubes?

anybody got a link to a site which shows how they work and how they seal the puncture and also how many punctures can i have before it needs to be replaced and can i still use the self sealing tube if there has been one puncture due to a thorn? it seems harder than when i pumped it up after i had the thorn in.

and is the substance in the slimy thing in the tube some sort of glue?

website, no, but here's how it works:

The substance in the tube is a latex compound that fills the gap left by a puncture and hardens. It gets injected into the tube a distributed evenly by centrifugal force.

There isn't enough air in the tube to allow the stuff to cure for a while, but it will tend to dry up and not work after a time. This all depends on where you live, how often you ride, what conditions you ride in, etc.

You can keep riding it as long as it lasts - that is, you'll know it's no good when you get a flat, pump it up, and it doesn't hold air. The number of flats isn't the issue, it's how long the stuff has been in the tube. A thorn leaves a pretty big hole so I'm not surprised it took a while to seal.

As long as it holds air, you're good to go.
