How many cyclists are there are in London? |
TFL claim that half a million journeys are made per day, but is there any more detailed information? Yeah, they only ever talk about numbers of journeys, not cyclists. I found this report on USA Today, of all places, claiming only 2% of Londoners cycle: http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2005-... And it's a fair comment to make that lots of cyclists jump red lights, ride on the pavement etc I'm a cyclist and a car driver (though not at the same time), and it happens a lot, far too much. However, to imply that other road users never break the law, jump lights, stop correctly in advance of stop lines at junctions, don't go over the speed limit, is a bit rich. It's probbaly more obvious in London, as travelling by bike you often go past large queues of stationary cars/lorries etc. It's probably also worth taking a look at the numbers of people killed and injured in this country each year by cyclists, then compare that to other forms of transport. More importantly, out of those half a million journeys, I wonder how many of them were made by cyclists who OBEYED the highway code - not many I bet ! - ! Sorry, couldn't find anything... Ok I dug a little deeper and found this but it's only about other countries... In the early 1980s it was estimated that there was 500 million cyclists in China (Think what it must be now) In 2000 Japan reported 80 million, accounting for 17% of commuter trips. In New York more than half of all household DO NOT own a car in Manhattan its more... over 75%! Walking or Cycling account for 21% of commuter trips! But nothing on London... strange |
