How to fix cog wear? |
I don't really want to replace the cog because the bike is only used probably 3 or 4 times every couple of months. I was wondering if there were any other cheap alternatives to squeeze a few extra kilometers out of it. How about filing the sides of the worn teeth to allow the chain to fit more snug? Usually the chain is the first thing to wear. Measure out a foot of chain you should be able to line a pin up with the zero and 12" marks. If it is more like an 1/8 over then the chain is shot. Riding a bike with a shot chain is just going to wear the cogs out quickly. If the cogs are all worn then not hammering the cranks will help a little. Finding better cogs/chain is the only way to improve the situation I doubt filing will do any good but if the cogs are shot you haven't much to lose. First off - what leads you to think the cog needs to be replaced? Are yu dropping your chain? Is it skipping? Or are you having general drivetrain issues? How new is the bike/chain/cog? Unless you are having problems with chain skip or a worn chain, I would just leave it alone, considering how often you ride. |
