I Need to diagnose some creaking?

I'm getting an awful lot of creaking whenever I pedal while standing up, unless i put a lot of weight over my handlebars.

I'm not entirely sure which part it's coming from. I'm guessing either my crankset or bottom bracket. I kind of doubt the crankset because it is LX in good condition, (as far as I know, I'm not the original owner) I'm not too sure about the bottom bracket though..

Soo.. The question is, is my problem bottom bracket, the crankset, or something else?

And to fix it, do I need to simply slap on some lube, adjust something, or get the part replaced?

Lots of good suggestions here. Let me add to them...

1. If you use cleats and clipless pedals the cleat/pedal may be creaking. Lightly lube the cleat and clip.

2. Spokes could be too, like someone said. I have a set of Spinergy with big aluminum nipples. Alum. nipple tend to creak much more than brass. I lubed them and resolved that creak.

3. These same wheels have an aluminum freehub. I removed the cassette and lightly greased the freehub body ridding myself of the last mystery creak.

Your crank arms need to be tight and the connection point should be lightly greased as well - that's my 1st guess as mentioned above.
It could be a bunch of reasons, but the most 3 likely ones are:

1) Crank arms are loose. These do need maintenance periodically, and the maintenance cycle INCREASES as parts become higher quality.

2) It may be coming from your handlebars or stem. These should be checked and tightened. If you have a threadless steerer it might be a good idea to remove the stem, lube the steerer with grease, and reassemble. If you've never done this before have a bike shop do it.

3) If you have an aluminum or carbon fiber frame it could be frame creak. With aluminum- especially high zoot USED aluminum it could be as serious as a crack. They are usually hairline cracks and are extremely dangerous. I have never ridden a carbon fiber road or mountain bike that didn't have a little noise to it under high power.

Redz,
There are a few areas which may cause the creaking sound
2 of them I am familiar with.
The chain the chain needs to be lubricated
the bearings can be dried out caused an inconvient delay in my bike riding. I hope you get your situation corrected.
make sure the chain and the bearings are lubricated.
this is what make for quiet riding
I am familiar with lubricating the chain
but the bearings this was new to me.
well, the first question is right about the cranks and stuff, but you can also check the pedals
Most likely that the problem lies in your crankset or your bottom bracket.

Try this: use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts on your crankarms (seet the wrench no higher than 30 ft-lbs). Go out and ride. If you still hear the creak, the problem is likely your bottom bracket. Make sure that the unit is properly mounted tight in the frame. If the mount is solid and it is still creaking, your only option is replacement.

If you still hear the creaking after you swap out the BB, then you might consider investing in a new crankset as the spindle ends of your crankarms may be deformed from riding them loose.
