Hybrid Bicycle? |
What are your thoughts on hybrid biycles. I am going to do a sprint distance Triathlon in September, and if I like it I will work up to longer distances. I need to buy a bicycle, but I was hoping for something that I could take offroad a bit too. Heavy and slow. Not suitable for competition unless you like to finish way, way, way at the back. Designed for middle aged moms to ride up and down a groomed rail-trail. If you want off-road & on-road + suitable (more or less) for tri racing, look at a cyclocross bike. I second the motion regarding a cyclocross; it's basically a road style frame with more aggressive tires, and will me much faster than a clunky hybrid. It's made specifically for triathletes too. For off-road rides, you can switch out the tires; on road, you can use a slicker tire. Perfect compromise. I'd go with a road bike. They're lighter and faster. Bikes are never one size fits all. You won't see a hybrid in a triathlon. Unfortunately, hybrids are not very good for any type of racing. If you don't want to drop a whole bunch of cash you may want to check out http://rscycle.com and check out their closeout bikes. For about $400 you can Tommaso Capri. Excellent bike for the money, and although not quite a competition bike it will do great until you are ready to buy a true tri bike. 27 years in the industry I'm with the others. A hybrid is not fit for racing, and for that matter, it's not fit for riding off-road either. You're better off with a cheap road bike and a cheap mountain bike if you want to do both. I'd recommend getting a decent road bike, though, and waiting on the mountain bike until you can afford it. After blowing your whole stash of cash on that nice road ride, start saving for the mountain bike. |
