How do i measure my bottom bracket size?

I know that the first number in sizes is the frame width but what does the other number mean e.g 68/73-118mm. what does the 118mm mean?

The two measurements are:

Bottom Bracket shell width (off frame)

Axle/Spindle Length measured from each end of the spindle.

Keep in mind, if you're replacing the crank too, you might need to adjust the spindle width, or find a crank that'll work with the size you have.

Good luck Source(s): work in a bike shop
LMAO!!!!ROFL!!!!!
That is the overall length of the spindle itself. Different cranks use different spindle lengths, so make sure if you're getting a new bb, you get one that matches the cranks.
The 118 does refer to the width of the spindle, and 118 usually is for a triple set-up. The 68 and 73 refer to the thread count and one is english and the other is Italian. You can check the difference on www.nashbar.com. If in doubt, take the bike to a bike shop and they will measure the bike for you.
You are correct that 68/73 is the two different bottom bracket shell width. The 118mm is the spindle length and other information you may find on a bottom bracket such as 1.37" x 24 TPI refers to the threading. (English threading).
