What's a good bike for long distance riding while carrying a lot of gear?

I am interested in doing long bike trips, carrying camping supplies and food and whatnot. Any make and model suggestions?

I think it's silly to claim C 'dale or any brand as "best" I own a C 'dale BTW and love it.

You need a medium weight road or possibly a cross bike. The frame needs to have all the welded bosses to attach racks etc. Wheels should be medium weight with 25cm or larger tires. Look on-line at makers:
Cannondale, Trek, Giant, Specialized are some big names.

You didn't say if it's road, off road or a combination. I'd suggest a cross type touring bike if the roads are dirt or in poor shape at all. Without mentioning your skill level, fitness, what a long trip means to you (100 miles or 10,000?) it's hard to nail down a particular model.
Cannondale Touring(Ultegra) is best and I saw one yesterday filled to the gills.
If you're carrying full gear on a long road tour, you want a specific purpose-built touring bike. You can possibly convert a mountain bike, depending on the model and specifics.

There are lots of bikes out there that "you can tour on"... this is not the same as a real touring bike.

The Trek 520 was a good model. C'dale makes a touring bike. Also check these sites for good advice:
