How do I shift the gears on my bike properly?

I must be shifting them wrong because sometimes it skips and most of the time it makes a strange nosie.

Is this a new problem? If it is new there are several things to be concerned over.
1) Is this happening only under a high load?
2) only in the front or rear derailleur?
3) only when shifting between certain gears?
4) does it skip then finally go into gear?
Here are a few things to look at.
Check your gears for worn or bent teeth.
Check to see if your chain might be worn out also.
Check for derailleur mis-alignment.
If you are not sure how to check or make the adjustments go to a bike store and have them do the work.

update:
Your cable needs to be re-adjusted.
Being a new bike take it back to where you got it, they should fix it. Cable adjustments on a new bike is not uncommon.
bring it to a bike shop and get the gears checked and adjusted
bring it to a shop and get it fixed, there's a problem with the sprocket and the chain
