Should I get smaller wheels? |
I have a really nice old school schwin 10 speed continental but its too big for me. Should I get smaller wheels so my feet can actually reach the ground? Congratulations, what you call "old school" Schwinn steel bikes are highly prized on the collectors market. Waterford now makes their bikes in the Schwinn factory. If you're thinking of returning the bike to mint condition, contact them, give them the BIN number (often engraved on the downtube) and they'll send you the original specs, color etc. www.waterfordbikes.com Now, about the fit. Your bike frame must fit you to ride safely and comfortably and it sounds like yours is much to big for you. You can not and must not simply slap 650 rims on a bike with 700 (full size) wheels. What the others sed. You'd have to replace the brakes which means not just pads but probably your brake levers, cables as well. You might want shorter crank arms anyway, I'm 5'1" and use 165 crank arms. Most bikes come with 170. Simply put ... if your wonderful classic bike does not fit you, trying to do all this will cost you more than a new bike and "ruin" the classic look of the bike. Find a local bike shop near you that gives good service. Ask them to help you find a buyer and....to FIT you to a new bike. Source(s): www.bikejournal.com you need to get a new bike if you just chang the wheels it will through off the balance If you do that, the brakes won't stop the bike. the brakes will not touch the rims. And the pedals will hit the ground when it turns. |
