How good is the shimano nemesis gear system? |
How good is the shimano nemesis gear system? I'm not to sure Shimano makes a "Nemesis" system. They do have a hub gear system called the Nexus. This is a quite good system. It is not a high performance system so if you are racing this is probably not for you. Nexus is very easy to use and adjust. There are no derailleurs front or back. There is very little that can go wrong. Adjusting the gears is as simple as lining up two yellow marks (in fourth gear). The eight speed can be set up to cover the same gear range as a standard 2 x 10 road bike. Being an eight speed the steps are large though even. Nexus's big sell points are low maintenence and ease of use. If you do most of your riding in fith gear (1:1) there is virtually no wear in the hub. With only one cog front and back you can run a 1/8 wide chain so you can expect more chain life than the multispeed 3/32 chain. Changing gears is very easy you can do this stationary also. Most come with a twist shift. Any numer of gears can be changed at one time. They also change very smoothly. I bought a Nexus 8 speed for my wife some time ago. She used to struggle changing deraileur gears, but loves this system. I actually quite like riding it also. The only thing I've touched is the barrel adjuster to realign the yellow marks. (This is to be expected in a new bike about a ten second job) I know people that clock up heaps of miles on nexus and rave about the low maintainence. they only make good stuff. shimano name means excellence.
