Whatever happened to the "standard motorcycle?"?

I've noticed the industry is really focused into two segments...the sport cyles and cruisers (choppers). But where have the standard motorcycles gone? My example is the Honda CB series, in particular the 750 Nighthawk (they only make a 250 now). The sport cycles are too uncomfortable for me and I'm not much into the Harleys and Harley look-alikes. I'm aware of the naked bike styles (Yamaha FZ, Suziki SV, Honda 919).

Modern economics is what happened to the standards of old...manufacturers have to build what will sell and what's trendy at any given period of time. Right now, cruisers and sport bikes are the cat's ***. Doesn't mean that it won't change, but I'd say it will be a while.
Kawasaki finally gave up on their Voyager (I own one) and it wasn't because it lacked anything in particular鈥攖hey just were the same bike from 1986 to 2004 and they weren't selling enough to keep on making them. Whether they have a new tour bike in mind, I don't know. I'm like you, I'm too old to be comfortable on a sport bike and I refuse to pay 19K and up for a tour bike. Guess we'll be looking for and fixing up old iron soon...K ;o)
if you can't find a MC u like wit all the choice out there forget it....mayb u need to buy a new triumph they are making brand new 1960 models.. or look in hemmings motor news for an old restored one...norton,bsa,triump.CB 750...i loved my 1986 yamaha virago 650
Good question! I suppose the cycle makers are just giving the consumers what they say they want. There just seems to be so much demand for the crotch rockets and harley-clones that building anything else just doesn't make sense from the manufacturer's point of view. I much prefer the "standard" style myself. My first bike was a BMW R65, and now I ride a BMW K75RTP. I haven't seriously considered buying a new bike in years - I doubt I ever will.
YMMV
They have been replaced by better.

You can still find good running CB Hondas all over the place, they are still pretty popular.
I think most people will agree that standard bikes look really really ugly. Manufacturers know this so they don't want to waste the money for the few people who like them.

By the way, cruisers aren't the same things as choppers
