What are some pros and cons of getting a Triumph Bonneville as my first bike? |
I've been looking and I really like the look of the bonneville. I also like the 2003 Suziki Marauder, SV650 or the Harley Sportster. I'm looking at used because I don't want to spend a lot of money. Everyone I would ride with has a cruiser, so I don't want to get the 650. The triumph is my favorite as far as looks, but I don't know alot about motorcycles and it has a chain. Is that bad? Any suggestions or comments on the Bonneville? Steer clear of the Harley, unless you have a large slush fund for repairs. THe Suzuki is a reliable machine. The Bonneville, if it is a newer model (you didn't specify) could be pretty good. Some of the older Triumphs had electrical glitches that can be hard to trace. Lucas (manufacturer of Brit electronics) is not referred to as "the Prince of Darkness" because he was evil, but because the lights might go out at any moment! A Japanese machine would probably be okay, but for a first bike, you should probably go for something less performance-driven than the Marauder. I like Triumphs, I like the look, feel and ride of my old '73 TR5T. I think they are more reliable then a Harley, and I don't really care for the light wieght and supsention of the Jap bikes in a cruiser. The downside of the Triumphs (at least here in the US) is that parts and work are pricey. You could probably get onto a Bonneville and be comfortable as a first bike. Most bikes have chains, it's tried and true. The driveline is a new addition on mass produced consumer bikes. The Bonnie may be too tall for you in its stock condition. The seats were a little high, I think. The Sportster will put you off of motorcycling , permanently. Steer clear. The Marauder is popular because of its low seat height. It makes good power and will run with the other cruisers. Chains are OK, you just have to service them , periodically. Different strokes for different folks (pun intended). You have to decide what is right for you by getting on one of each for at least an hour and try them out. I mean run it on the highway, in a residential area and take it through an apartment complex with speed bumps and get a little speed up and go over them. After all it is going to be your kidneys and your A S S on the bike for the next few years so it is worth a good test drive by YOU. No one can pick a bike for you. I have all sorts of friends that i ride with and there is every kind of bike imaginable in the group and we all start from the same place and all end up where we are going just some are stiffer when they get there. Good Luck with it!! |
