Yamaha Royal Star; do they have any known mechanical or design issues?

I'm considering a used or new Royal Star (V-4 engine touring cruiser) for a touring bike for my wife and I. We would use it for medium to long travel days (300-1000mi) We have a BMW R 1150 R now which we take short rides on, but to her the slightly forward lean of the passenger seat (plus backrest) is uncomfortable after an hour or so.

I worked at a few dealerships including just a yamaha franchise. If you decide to buy a newer one after 2003-2004 you will have no dramas, Yamaha is actually more reliable than honda. Parts are also cheaper than kwaka and honda and most definatly suzuki. From memory the royal star had a rear fender fault in 2001 where the vibration was cracking it. You shouldnt have dramas with electrical items.
If you decide to buy brand new, make sure you check out the royal star accessories... and also Cobra pipes, They sound excellent
I used to be a salesman in a bike dealership, so what I'm about to say comes from personal experience, they are junk! I can't tell you how many of them came back for valve problems, cam problems, etc... And when things went bed, they were very expensive to repair. Anyway, that's just what I've seen, hope it helps you in your decision.
Great cycle!!
It's funny that harleys are starting to look like them!!
