Shifting on mongoose xr100 problems? |
i need some help. i can't find anything on how to adjust that shifting mecanism! i paid 20 bucks for the bike so i would have an extra for my girlfriend cuz she can't afford her cruiser yet. it is a shimano comfort (c 050). i have fixed shifting mecanisms before (gary fisher mamba, my favorite bike ever!) so i just need instructions. please help me!!! the previous answer is very good and thorough, but you should know as well that as these derailleurs wear out, their shifting performance declines much worse than traditional derailleurs. for this reason, the design has pretty much been abandoned and shimano no longer manufactures models to replace them. the only rapid rise derailleurs made today are actually for very high end mountain bikes and cost as much as your whole bike. if the springs in your derailleur are very worn out, as they often do get with this model you may have to put up with very poor shifting if you don't want to dump a lot of money into the bike. you may be able to replace it with a standard (non rapid-rise) such as a shimano tourney, but the shifting mechanism will always indicate the wrong gear, unless you replace that too. The C50 derailleur is a little weird for some people in that it is a "low normal" or "Rapid Rise" derailleur, so it works exactly backwards from many others. Here are the directions. This is a little long.... REAR DERAILLEUR: 1) Shift bicycle into low gear (largest sprocket) in the rear. Make sure that the shifter is also in low gear. 2) From the back of the bike, check to make sure that the top pulley on the derailleur and the cog on the back wheel line up. If they don't, turn the "L" limit screw until this condition exists. 3) Check the cable tension. There should be no tension on the cable and no excess slack. To remove slack, turn barrel adjuster on the derailleur out until the slack disappears. 4) If the barrel adjuster backs all the way out, screw it back in halfway. Loosen the cable fixing bolt and pull the cable through. 5) While holding the cable taut, tighten the cable fixing bolt. Be careful not to overtighten. Recheck cable tension. 6) Shift bike to high gear (smallest cog) in the back. From the back of the bike, check to make sure that the top pulley on the derailleur and the cog on the back wheel line up. If they don't, turn the "H" limit screw until this condition exists. 7) Check for smooth shifting. 27 years in the industry |
