I'm considering buying a motorcycle from a used dealer. But I need help. I want to spend less than 4 grand,

I don't want a crotch-rocket, and I want it to be a good starter bike. And I want it to be reliable, obviously.

Is this a good dealer and which bikes would you recommend given my specs?

I looked at the web site. This place is hugely expensive!!!
I have 4 years experience working with used bike sales.

Perhaps they are willing to negotiate a large amount off the suggested prices.
get a honda shadow 750 "classic delux"

get it from a private party, use www.craigslist.com

out of those on the link, the 02 suzuki blvd. 650 looks interesting.
owned one, I own a Harley now and liked this bike better
I'd say just about any relatively new Japanese cruiser, 750 cc or less, can make an appropriate starter bike for an average sized man. And these are not too hard to find in your price range. Be sure it's not too heavy for you to handle and you should be OK.
If you've not passed your test (judging from the "good starter bike" Part), you'll obviously be stuck to anything underneath 125cc, personally I'd go for the honda CB125, really anything of the right size and if you dont want to sound like a total tit (think of the sounds of the crazy frog) then get a 4 stroke wherever possible, these make a much better sound.
The other one i've used in the past was an SYM XS125, this is an extremely comfortable and fairly fast naked bike.
Good hunting! And good on you for not going for the crotch-rockets! you're a traditionalist just like myself.
Hi,

His prices seem high.

Specifically, he wants $6900 for a 2006 Suzuki Blvd 800 with 475? miles. Granted that is very low mileage, the bike is 1 year old, AND you can buy it brand new for about that. I think the list is $6700 for a new one, plus all the dealer add on costs.

For the older bikes, his prices look high also.

Also there are several 250 cc bikes available brand new for under $4000.

I'd keep looking.

Good luck

Richard
Hi Henry, the guy is a dealer so his prices are a little over in my opinion but that's how he makes his living. The 500 Ascot is a great starter if you can get him to knock a few bucks off or not.. That's about what the bike went for new. But it's a great bike. V-Twin, water cooled with shaft drive. It isn't super fast but it handles great has plenty of power and it's a classic.
But if you save your money and keep an eye out you can get a better deal. There is a lot of cheap Japanese stuff out there. Craigslist.com, Cycle Trader.com, local paper, word of mouth.
If you haven't had any or much experience riding you might want to find a cheap little bike that you can run in the dirt (like a 125 or 250 or 350) to really learn how to ride before you hit the street with a full size motorcycle.
What ever you decide to do take the MSF riders course before you hit the street and I won't worry about you...too much. Good Luck
