What's a good bicycle for a 300-pound man?

I'm looking to buy a bicycle for a 300-pound man who is going to use it to ride back and forth to work in an effort to lose weight. It will only be ridden on paved roads and sidewalks. He prefers a bike with more than one speed, so cruisers are of no use. He will probably customize it as he has the money, but at first it will need to be a stock bike. What brand or style of bicycle will hold a person that heavy and will serve them well?

I'd recommend a cro-moly steel framed touring bike. There are many manufacturers of these. They are designed for touring long distance with large loads.

The tourers usually come with plenty of gears (up to 3 x10) and are capable of respectable speeds when unloaded. Added advantage of being able to stick the panniers etc on and go for a trip when he is in shape.
mongoose-really tuff and durable bicycle most have 6 speeds
I have actually been fairly impressed with the Trek ZX series of fitness bikes. These bikes are great for commuting and all around riding on roads. They are strong, well built, and quite nimble. Check out the Trek 7.3ZX or 7.5ZX. Can't go wrong.
Do NOT buy a bike from Walmart / K-mart / Target, ect. They're all JUNK ! Take him to a real bike shop. They'll be able to set him up with something that will fit him..
I recommend a mountain bike, but take the knobbies off and put some slicks or semi-slicks on it. The heavier rims will better tolerate the weight than a road bike will.
Also, the stock saddle will likely need to be replaced right away with something wider and more comfortable.
