What is the best bicycle to buy for about $100-200? For exercising and pratical use of riding to classes?

I'm looking for a bike that will be good for exercising but is not mainly a road bike. I'm looking for something that is good to ride on the road but I can take it off the road and go across a yard or a field. I go to college and in case I need to cut across campus I can. I don't know much about bikes the on I got now is a Next which I got from Wal mart and its what I call a beach cruiser no gears, no hand breaks, just a regular bike. I'm just looking for something to get around campus and to use for exercise. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Bump your budget up a little and you can get a new mtn. bike or hybrid like a Giant Cypress or Giant Sedona for under $300 or very close to $300. Trek has some cruisers or hybrids (mtn. bike cross) for around $300 also. Go to a bike shop and you might be surprised. Some also sell used bikes (already serviced & repaired).
Always remember and never forget that Wal-Mart, Sears, Target. etc. are NOT bike shops. If all you want to spend is $100-200, pretty much expect to have to replace that bike after about two or three months. My first suggestion to you would be to go to a real bicycle shop and reassess your needs (and how much you are willing to pay). Besides, you might get lucky and find a shop that sells used bikes instead of a bike put together by the same guy who put together the swingset in the Lawn and Garden section.
in that price range there isnt much. now days even budget bikes at walmart often have an aluminum frame and falcon indexing derailures. i noticed walmart's most expensive bike has aluminum rims, quick release front and rear, bottle bosses for water bottle cages, and a propper crank and bottom bracket instead of a one piece crank. honestly that isnt bad for a discounter, but it is almost 300.00. those things i listed are good to look for. anodized aluminum wheels are a must. quick release is a must to change flats easily without having to carry wrenches around. a three piece crank and bottom bracket means you can upgrade with higher end parts down the road if you wish. if you can up that a little more you can get on a real bike like a giant or something for like 350.00. for under 200.00 you just arent going to get much.
I'd suggest you find a hybrid bike; it has less aggessive tires that a mountain bike, making it less tiring to ride around on flat surfaces, but still capable of riding across grass or gravel.

I can understand that a student doesn't have a lot of $$ to spend, so you may want to check out www.craigslist.com for a used bike (just make sure you can take it to a bike shop for an inspection before you commit to buying it) or call some local shops and see if they sell used bikes. Buying something new for under $200 is going to give you a piece of junk that you'll hate riding and will break, so try to find something of better quality if you can.
$100-$200 wont get you much in quality today. my suggestion would be to go to a bike shop and invest in a entry-level, hybrid. its a mtn. bike style frame, but set up for just dinking around bike trails and around town. itll last you a bit longer, and easy to maintain. its not over the top so i believe youll be able to handle it very well. schwinn, gt, trek, giant all make a very good bike. usually no more than $350. good luck
