How do I make sure I don't get ripped off when I buy a bicycle?

I want to buy a cruiser and I've gone to a few different stores and I feel like they are trying to rip me off - I was looking at a 1960- somthing cruiser- but it was rusted and needed a new chain, they wanted $340.00 for it.

I don't need a speed bike, I just want something to ride around town. but I would like an older bike.

What should I look for? How much should I pay- where should I shop?

If you are looking for a old used cruiser just to look at any of the on-line classified ads in your area. There are always people selling their old bikes that they don't use anymore. For me about $100 is a decent price for a used bike that is in working condition. Make sure it fits you and you are comfortable when you are riding it. Pay attention to the weight of the bike, there are some real heavy weights out there and they will just make you more tired when you ride. And like some of the others have said find friend who is into cycling, I am sure you know one - there is a bunch of us out there.
I would just buy a cheaper mountain bike, because those are much less than road bikes, and they are safer to ride.
just take a some man with u to do the job
try the dump or maybe a relative or friend has an old vintage bike a rusted away bike should not cost 360 dollars or just look online and call some stores and think about other models
Go online and get information and cost and then go out into the cruel cruel world. It might be cheaper online and you can always find a coupon for free shipping online too. Good Luck!
Easy - Take a friend!! (or a Friend's parent, friend's friend)
Find someone who is already into cycling and is very knowledgeable. They will know he local stores and the staff working there. You will get the confidence of having their experiencec on your side and benefit from the fact that the shop doesn't want to upset an existing good client.

I take friends bike shopping regularly - It's great, I get to help a friend and go bike shopping without having to spend money :)

Happy riding
You were looking at a classic, and $340 was probably not a bad deal if that's what you're into. But going to a bicycle shop is the best way to go, really. They DO NOT work on commission, and the profit margin on bicycles is very slim; bike shops make their money on accessories and service, not bikes.

DO NOT go to Wal-Mart or any other department store. They do not have the skills to safely build a bicycle, and do not sell anything of quality.
