First bike, what do you reccomend?

Ok ladies and gents! Here we go! I've skimmed through a few of the topics about first bikes, but most of them are leaning towards cruisers. I'm looking for my first bike and I'd LOVE for it to be a Honda CBR or a Yamaha YZF, I'm looking for a used one (of course).

What do you think? I'm a pretty tall, athletic girl and I want something good on mpg for roadtrips that still has the sexy look of the CBRs.

Have anything in mind? =]

Yes, I know. I'm looking to get one eventually. My question would be the latter part of the question, though. Not my hopes ;]

I have ridden before, but now I'm finally looking for one for myself. =] Perhaps I should have stated that. =p

Thanks for your input!

the cbr or the yfz is not a beginners bike.
thost bikes are for experienced riders only.
a good starter bike would be the suzuki
sv650. great beginners bike.

Suzuki GS 500F

I dunno, but as previously mentioned, cbr and yzf are not really for beginners! For my first bike, I would go for a GS500 (or SV650) from Suzuki... even a Katana 600 wouldn't be bad... but I would prefer GS500 or Kawasaki Ninja 500 (also called EX500).. All of them have the sporty look but are GREAT for beginners! For your first bike, I would recommend anything below 600cc... like a 500cc... since it's good on insurance and good to give you the practice you need. 500cc are also okay on highways for trips...

When you are ready, you can move to 600cc or 750cc and hence buy the YZF or CBR you always wanted :)!

Good luck and have a great riding season!!

hooray buell! I ride a firebolt xb9r and have loved every minute i've owned it. You can get pretty good deals on them used and mine has been nothing but reliable, not to mention they are virtually maintainence free (except for routine oil changes, tires, ...). No valve adjustments, replacing/lubing/adjustin chains...
Plus with the belt drive, the power is instant. There is no lag like there is in bikes with a chain.

I will warn you though. If you are taller than 5' 11" you will want something esle. I am 5' 11" and i can comfortably ride about 150miles straight, but after that it just hurts. The clip ons are fine, but the pegs are pretty high up, so if you get one, but the lowered peg kit for it. It makes a huge difference.

If you don't want a buell (and you'd be CRAZY not to!), something like a used zx-6r or a ninja 650R would be a good choice. You said you had riding experience, right? Hopefully with street bikes. Dirt bikes don't count because they're a lot different than street bikes.

Hmm, also, the sv650 isn't a bad choice (like someone mentioned already), yamaha fz6's are nice.

Look on craigslist in your area and you can usually find some great deals on used sportbikes. Just make sure it's comfortable to ride and it's not too powerful for you. Anything with an inline 600 or so or a 1000cc or less buell (xb9r, xb9s..). Also, i'd stay away from ititian bikes because the maintanence is expensive as are the parts for them.

CBRs and YZFs (large or small versions, but I am assuming 600cc) are not really designed with roadtrips in mind 鈥?they have very little provision for luggage and at 5' 11" you will be tucked in tight. Neither of these high performance bikes give good mpg compared to other less tuned bikes. A Fazer or Hornet would probably be more to your liking but even those would be a bit much for a beginner.

I like my Ducati Monster 695 (previously the 620). I started on a Harley Sportie 883 and hardly rode it. I switched to the Duc and have been all over the place! I'm tall too and didn't have to make any modifications to it. It's a little more upright than other sportsbikes so it's great for manuevering. I have the black/red... it's sexy!

Be sure and take all of the classes you can! I suggest Keith Code's Superbike course.

Good luck and happy riding!

Go for a Buell

I would recommend a Honda CT110. Great beginners bike, automatic clutch, great for around town, runs on the smell of an oily rag. http://www.postiebikes.com
