OK back to the first question I ever asked here A Chink 125 Viva?? Engine Is there a Honda engine that will replace it?
Nick (My Grandson ) has about ran through this one 6 yrs old wont be ready for a "real" bike for 2 more years I used to like you two
Mag he has all he needs for your quack bird
Dog if I put him on a Harley people couldnt tell you apart when he gets a foot taller Sure,,,all those engines are Chinese Clones of Honda Horizontal Singles---
Old "Honda 50" engines.
Cub 50's
Minitrail 50
Minitrail 70
ATC 3 wheeler 70
CL "streetbike" 70
Step-Thru 50 & 70
Older SL 70's Dirtbikes
Latest Model CRF 50's are based on same engine
Same Basic engine has been used since very early 1960's.
They have a couple variations in Trans/Clutch
3spd Auto Clutch
4 speed Manual.
Also Possible to convert from Manual to Auto Clutch & Vice Versa.
Plus,,,an "undocumented Kink"
An Auto Clutch,,,set up WITH a Hand Lever .
Ride around "normal" using the centrifugal Auto Clutch,,,,,,and then Pull in the lever ,Rev it Up,and Pop the Clutch like a regular clutch.
For whatever reason anyone would wanna do that.
And electrical systems have some variations.
Some have Magnetos
some have battery ignition
Some had electric start
Most are 6v,,,a few are 12v
The "Honda 90" is a little different,,,but also interchangeble with a very Small effort.
There's a BUNCH of Variations of the basic "Honda 90 engine"
90,110,125cc
3 spd Auto or manual
4 spd Auto or manual
Dual Range 4 speed
Alternator
Magneto
Magneto CDI
Electric Start
6v or 12 v
All in a BUNCH of various model from early 60's thru mid 80's at least
Seems "complicated" but none of the necessary adaptations or mods that MAY be required to use a particular version is Difficult.
It's all pretty simple, easy stuff to be able to use ANY of them
.........................................
The lil' Hondas have a growing Cult Status,,,and they're all fairly OLD at this point in time.
That's made them Scarcer and More expensive.
I'm no more of a Fan of the Chinese Clones than anyone else,,,
but Some are not Really that bad.
Heck,,Y'all Have one,,You know how it's been.
There not too bad.
There are Chinese replacement engines available for Cheaper than you can find Genuine Hondas.
Rebuild or even Freshen Up a Real Honda is Worthwhile---but it can be expensive for a lil' fart motor.
LOTs of Chinese Motors come with Carb, cables,CDI ignition & "box",,Electric Start,,,etc---just damn near an entire turn-key package for between $200~300.
The PRICE is a bargain,,,,and the overall quality is Decent enough to make them a reasonable Value.
If you wanted a motor that's been Proven to Last 20~30~40 Years...it'd Have to be a Genuine Honda.
If Quick & Easy & "Good Enough" ,,,and CHEAP... would work OK,,
Those Chinese motors are worth a look
No Sales Pitch,,,just saying.

While shopping around especially for a "Replacement" of something Your lil' Big Guy is USED TO,,,
keep in mind the Clutch and Shifting Differences.
Auto-Clutch vs Full Manual
3spd vs 4 spd
and Shifting Pattern>>some are Normal 1-N-2-3-4
Others are "Rotary" ,,ya pull up again from 4th to hit neutral.
So it is a Constant "Pull Up" shift
N-1-2-3-4>N-1-2-3-4
Kids figure out ANYTHING quick.
But,,You May wanna CHANGE what he's running now,,,,
Or You may wanna stay the Same.
Just as Easy to do,, Either way.
One other thing---
If he was 10~12,,,and it was a Dirt Bike,,,
He would NOT Likely be too happy about any Downgrade in power.
But even if he's a VERY Good rider,,,most 6 yr olds are not quite yet as Demanding of "power".
And typical Mini-Chopper Riding Style is not either.
So if You happen to find a deal on a decent Honda 50cc or 70cc to replace a 125cc,,,
Or a Cheapie-Chinc 100~110cc engine,,,,
I'd bet He'd be quite happy with the power output and avg riding performance.
They are all plenty peppy,,,even the 50's.
Not Dead Dogs at all.
SOME Mini-Trail Z-50's from way back had Throttle Limiters meant for bare Beginners.
EZ to remove those.
Those restricted ones ARE weak and slooow,,,they only run barely above idle.
Beyond that 1 exception,,ALL those lil' Honda motors run plenty good.
Ya never know what Ya might find,,,
ANY of those horizontal Honda type motors will do a good job and any of them will bolt-in with very, very little effort.
In a Chinese Mini,,,any of the Chinese Clones probably are "Direct replacement"
There's a BUNCH of options,,
the only TUFF part may be Choosing which way to go.
Just Throw somethin' in there for the young fella,,and Y'all go enjoy the summer! i would get him a tour-glide,with nos, turbo, and all the other goodies.....you may have to take the training wheels off of your own bike to put on his,and maybe a railing so,you dont have to keep lifting him up onto it.
instead of forward controls, turn them around and use them as upper controls.
home now john just get him a road king or a sportster...same horsepower...
edit: oh you know i'm just poking fun...i like to tease the guys with almost double the displacement, and half the horsepower of mine...
a twinstar engine would probably be a great next step, a little bigger (185 to 200 cc) but not bad... like you can handle a road king or sportster maggy !
to answer your question try your lawnmower or weed wacker engine there this really cute chopper we got our grandson for Christmas it is from JC Penny.. we ordered that leather jacket the gloves and the helmet to go with it... he look like a hot little biker! |
