How do you begin building a chopper (motorcycle)? |
i want a chopper but i don't want one completely finished by someone else. i was told that buying a bike and turning it into a chopper is fairly easy and worth doing (not to mention less expensive than buying one done). but how do i know which bike would be better suited for modifying than others? i don't know where to begin, can someone point me in the right direction? Magazines, Look through Easy Rider, V-Twin and the like and choose a theme, Old School, Bobber , Pro Street etc. A Softail is probably your best bet for a "Donor Bike " as the other guy phrased it. Lots of aftermarket stuff for ST's. A big advantage to starting with a complete bike is that you can get around the Special Construction problems related to a ground up custom. Look for a rolling chassis set or a frame ,front end, tank and fenders. The majority of your Softail parts will bolt up . It's a lot of work but I've seen many done . A regular motorcycle and a chopper is not much of a difference. At least when they first came on the scene, after WWII. They basically replaced/extended the front forks. Then create your own custom bar and grips. As it caught on, more emphasis was placed on the frame. Just extending the forks will leave the engine at an angle. I am going off memory of what I have read and seen done. Check out this website to see what the professionals are CURRENTLY doing. http://www.custom-choppers-guide.com/... Good luck with your project!!! YOUR IMAGINATION....you know what you want to build, not any one else, you need time, space, money , determination and patience. An orginal chooper was just that, a stoke motorcycle that unneeded parts were chopped off to lose weight, ie: fenders, turn signals, smaller gas tanks, etc. . You can use a donor bike, american, brit or metric, there are several parts warehouses and manufactures to build whatever your heart and wallet desire. If you truly want a chopper, get a subscribtion to "The Horse, Back Street Choppers") (link below) they cover the outlaws of chopper building as well as regualarly have many technical articles, from fabbing your own gas tank to stretching a frame, Search ebay for old copies of IRON HORSE, worth their weight in gold, if you want to build a bike. Should you think about going metric(used KZ1000 is $1200), ARDCORE CHOPPERS from Indy will build you a reasonably priced custom rigid frame(no softtails) NO DISCRIMINATION A CHOPPER IS A CHOPPER! IMHO, it doesn't matter if you use a donor bike or start with bought parts or fab them, if you put it together, then you know whats its all about, you gave your machine soul. a $30,000 motorcycle and a $30 t-shirt doesn't make you a biker www.ironcross.net www.ardcorechoppers.com i built my own and i cant stress this enough, pick up the book" how to build a chopper" it covers everything you need to know. i got my copy at half.com for $4.... Try J&Pcycles online. they offer build a bike kits for around 13,000.00. If you are planning to build a harley style chopper, this will give you everything you need and you can pick and choose on some of the components. |
