I want to build a custom chopper. What's a good Harley to start with?



I am looking for something that's relatively cheap to buy and custom parts are readily available. In the end i'd like 18 degree forks, custom tanks and a 300 tire on the back etc. If possible it would be relatively easy to work with as well as the aforementioned details because this will be my first major bike project. I'd also like to know where the parts would be available, or at least good quality and well priced companies to buy them from.

You can get a wide tire kit for Softails that will allow a 250 or possibly bugger rear tire. Hit the swap meets in your area for parts such as tank, seat, bars, etc.. The main thing is make it your own, get your vision solidified so it doesn't just look like a pile of parts when your done. 300 tires look cool but seriously affect rideability and cornering, so be sure of what you want. Nothing you mentioned is cheap! That being said, check w/ a local bike shop (preferably not a dealer) as they will work more w/ you and will try more edgy stuff. Listen to the grey beards, read "The Horse" magazine and possibly even "Iron Horse" magazine now that Snow and Fritz are back on board. It doesn't have to have hi $$$ paint, lots of chrome or a hot engine to be fun and keeping this in mind will keep your price down. Good Luck!
SON, if you need to ask about all that, you gonna have trouble. You have any idea what your doing?? for starters, theirs a HUGE different between building a custom chopper & buying a old harley.. you will never get a 300 tire on any stock harley. in fact i dont think theirs even a after market kit.. highest i've seen on a harley other then a custom after market frame is 200...Good luck 2 ya
I agree with Inked. There's alot more to building a bike then pulling numbers and sizes out of the air and saying I want THAT. If you really want to build a bike do some reasrearch ask ppl that have done it read check out mags. Do your homework. Even if you spend a year learning you will be alot better off.
If you want a 300 rear tire and extended rake, you may not want to start with a Harley at all.
Have you considered going 100% aftermarket/special construction or a rolling chassis kit?
There is a catalog 'Jireh Cycles' very low prices, they're worth checking out.
If you are going to start with a Harley, I'd say a pre-Twin cam Softail,seems like there are more options available for them.
Try the JP cycles catalogue, and/or online-lots of custom parts, and OEM stuff. Harley? Ok then. Look for a customized/custom fram that will accept the swing arm for a '300' tire, this won't be cheap, as HD stands for "hundred dollars' as in - anything Harley is 100.00. There are auto finders, bargain finders, as well as ads in easyrider and other mag.s that may have these type of frames/stuff at more reasonable prices. raking requires skill, alignment, and ability to weld professionally , if this isn't you - have it done! Don't risk your life on a faulty weld! Keep looking and gathering parts , and investigate exactly what you need BEFORE paying for it.

My friend if i were you i would get a frame from jp or big dog cycles. Then pick up a rev tech engine. Since its your first build you would be better off starting from scratch then trying to tear down and rebuild. The harley engines tend to shake way to much and break down more often. Plus if you start from scratch it will cut down on how many parts you actually have to end up buying especially if you keep the bike naked, like a true chopper.
