What does rake and stretch mean? |
i am planning on building my first kit bike chopper with some help from my friends, but plan on doing this mostly myself. so right now i am looking for a chopper frame, and i want to know what rake and strectch means when pertaining to a motorcycle frame. When it comes to motorcycles: Rake pertains to the angle of the steering head in relation to the ground. The stretch is the length of additional tubing added to the back bone or down tubes of a motorcycle frame compared to a stock Frame (usually a Harley Davidson Big Twin). I can email you the stock dimensions if you wish. Usually a combination of rake and stretch are used to determine "TRAIL" We build our choppers to have between 4-6" of Trail for the best handling characteristics. Trail is the most important part of the equation. There is a great Rake-Stretch-Trail Calculator on Perse Performance's Website located at www.perseperformance.com, Imput your dimensions and the calculator will tell you if it will be a safe ride or not. Good luck, and drop me a line if you are in need of a custom frame. Tony Jaffe Gypsy Choppers, Inc. 402-669-8669 www.gypsycustoms.com The degree and length of the front forks (As Keri said) Rake is the degree and stretched is the length. real Choppers are always customized and a frame can literally be stretched. Be careful how far you go with getting a stretched frame. Mostly rake and stretch has to do with the front end, but the frame and front end usually come seperate when your trying to buy parts to even equal a basket case. So ask with each purchase. And remember to check out your state laws on what is acceptable (I know acceptable and chopper in the same sentance, I'm cheesy). ie: Big Ape hangers are illegal in almost every state I can think of, but 18" apes aren't. And remember you'll have to get that beast around a corner too! |
