When was the bmx bike invented? started in early 1970's around '71. people took their bicycles onto dirt motocross tracks... and the sport began. I believe the first actual branded BMX bike was the Schwinn sting-ray, but no one person invented the sport. It evolved... Scot Breithaupt is credited as the inventor, as he organized the first bmx race. first race was called the pedi-cross on November 14, 1970 on a vacant lot in Long Beach, California. I remember taking a Schwinn Apple Krate apart, putting on a single saddle, touring handlebars, and a single speed rear wheel, then putting a 20" wheel on the front and installing heavy knobby tires on the front and rear. I was 10, so it must have been 1972 that I knew about BMX... but there were no BMX bikes. Not much later I bought a Matthews monoshock bike, and not long after that I bought a Mongoose Supergoose... or was it the other way around.... Anyway, ct is right... BMX didn't come full blown out of a bikies imagination, it evolved into what it is today. Freestyling and stunting aren't really BMX although the earliest riders modified BMX bikes to be able to do tricks. 27 years in the industry... and much longer experimenting with bikes who gives a flying god damn ****? |
