Which is better a steel or aluminum bike frame? |
I am about to buy a bmx bike and all I know about the frames are that steel is heavier than aluminum, but I don't know which one is better like which is going to last more longer or which one is most likely to fall apart in any second? It depends on what you expect from it. IF you plan on competeing and are ready to get a new frame on a regular basis, Aluminum is a good choice. It is generally lighter and stiffer, so it's easier to throw around under you. But it won't take the abuse like a steel frame and if you damage it, you might as well throw it away. Steel is heavier, but it's tougher and you'll have it for a long time if you don't drop it off a building. Aluminum pros - lighter, cheaper, can be stiffer if designed right. cons - durability Steel pros - tough, can be repaired, lasts well if taken care of, can be as light and stiff as aluminum if designed well. con - _usually_ heavier, light and stiff frames are quite expensive Steel is going to last longer but you need more muscle to perform tricks like on a aluminum bike. but aluminuim bike will fall apart sooner than steel but take good care of your bike and don't worry about it. Get Aluminum! Is not heavy and resist better the weather. Bad quality resist less that steel on hard use or abuse. Good ones resist the same or better. SOURCE: Experience@! well like u said steels heavier ... but it depends how ur going to bmx ... like little kids ... teens or real bmx ... see teens tend to ghost ride there bikes ( ride really fast then jump off and then the bike go alone just rolling there ) and kids just ride the bike ... but real bmx aluminum is lighter and holds great only brakes if u fall really hard on an angle, but all the years me and my friends bmx we never broke an aluminum frame ... lightness is what u want unless u can lift like 50lbs in which it doesnt matter ... hope this helped Hey Skirtz, If you are going to race BMX or ride half pipe definitely get an Aluminum frame. It will be faster off the line and easier to pedal through the berms. flats and whoops. And in the half pipe easier to toss around. If it is for dirt jumping stay with steel it will last longer and take the hard or off camber landings better. My BMX friends. steel is better for speed because of it's wight but you ate going to do stunts aluminum is better for it is lighter and more maneuverable. |
