What would you do if your sons bike got stolen? |
my son is 11 yrs old and he just got a brand new bmx bike. he was out with his friend, and left his bike unattended to go and look at a tree house. when he came back it was stolen. should i punish him or was it really not his fault. i really havent a clue how to deal with this. Don't punish or blame him. He has learned a valuable lesson. Take care of and watch your possessions. We don't teach that to our children. Let me tell you a short story. When I was growing up, my father passed away when I was very young. So, needless to say, things were tough. My mom worked very hard to support me and my sisters. ( I'm talking about the '40s). Anyway, I had a job delivering newspapers and wanted a bike. When my Birthday came, my mom presented me with a brand new J.C.Higgens bike from Sears Roebuck. I was so happy! Then she sat me down and explained the monthly payment plan, handed me the book and told me once a month I have to go and make a payment, which I did faithfully. Since that was the only worldly possession that I paid for, I took especially good care of it. That's because I had a personal investment in it. Today, we give our children things they want or we feel like they would enjoy, with no obligation to treat it responsibly. Consequently, since it cost them nothing, it is soon mistreated or destroyed and thrown in the garbage. I know, eleven years old is too young to get a job, but, you could tell him he must earn and save his allowance to purchase a new one. We as parents should be teaching our offspring the value of possessions. Then they will become good citizens and be more successful in life. IT REALLY WASNT HIS FAULT SO I WOULDNT BLAME HIM YOU SHOULD BLAME THESE PEOPLE OUT HERE THAT NEEDS TO STEAL TO GET WHAT THEY WANT Don't get mad at him. When he gets a new bike, tell him to always lock it and make sure he has a bike lock. call the police and report it, next time get a lock, do not punish him, loosing his bike is punishment enough How sad! this may sound silly but is he aware that people steal.. I dont know what kind of things have happend to him before, did you tell him to not leave bike alone? If you told him not to leave bike alone then he needs to learn the lesson. I would still buy him another bike but maybe make him wait it out for a little bit. Well it's a hard lesson to learn... I would let him go without a bike for a few weeks. I probably would make him earn another bike by setting up a "new bike fund." Over the next few weeks, I'd have him do extra chores around the house and pay into his "fund" so he can see that things don't come free. You might agree to match whatever money he has earned so that he is not without a bike for too long. Then buy him one of those bike chains with a combination lock. Teach him how to use it and write down the combo someplace you know where it is so if he forgets you can get it for him. I knew someone who was in a similar situation like this. She replaced the bike and charged her son .50 (cents) a week from his allowance for Bike Insurance. It taught him that responsibility just as insuring a car and the money was put in a savings to use in case something happened to the bike, something broke or it was stolen etc. I thought it was a great idea. |
