Do all BMX bikes go in reverse and can turn the steering 360 degrees? |
Do all BMX bikes go in reverse and can turn the steering 360 degrees? No BMX bikes have reverse because they have freewheels on the rear.... But if you roll down a hill backwards, I suppose you can go in reverse, but the pedals & crank will turn the whole time since freewheels are for forward motion. Not all go 360 depending on the style of bike and the placement of the seat, handlebars, neck, the lenght of your brake cables, and the forks. Unless you have a gyro, your brakes will get tangled. Source(s): Racing Rules No. I think you're referring to a 'freestyle' bike. True BMX (bicycle motorcross) bikes have a freewheel in the back that allows the bike to coast without pedaling. The handlebars also cannot rotate 360 degrees without binding the brake cable (usually single rear hand brake). A freestyle bike has a 'direct drive' rear end, like a track bike, that a user can pedal forward or backward (and the rear wheel will also go forward or backward respectively). There is also a coupling device up front to allow the handlebars to rotate 360 degrees without binding the cables (usually, freestyle bikes have both front and rear hand brakes). If there are no hand brakes, either bike style will allow the handlebars to rotate 360 degrees. Another style of rear-end has a coaster-brake which allows the rear end to freewheel going forward (coast without crank rotating) but when pedaled backwards, brake shoes engage against the interal hub of the rear wheel and stop the bike. This is the typical set-up most children start with and is not typical on a 'BMX' bike. I hope that helps. Technically, yes, all BMX bikes are able to turn 360 degrees (provided the seat doesn't get in the way of the handlebars and the brake cables are long enough.) However, without a gyro the brake cables will get tangled, so you would have to unwind them after every time. Most BMX bikes built for flatland riding (doing tricks on a flat surface) come standard with a gyro so you can spin the handles every which way and not have to worry about your cables getting tangled. About going in reverse... Most BMX bikes have a freewheel, meaning you can coast in reverse, but you can't pedal backwards to make your bike go backwards. It's possible to set your bike up to do this, but most are not set up like that to begin with. No BMX bikes can do what you are asking. |
