Small sprocket on my bike help? |
I was thinking of getting a smaller sprocket for my BMX/Skate Park bike, but, if you get a smaller sprocket does that mean you have to pedal more to go a little amount of distance, because i don't like the thought of having to pedal heaps. Is this the case, or can you just get a longer chain and move the back wheel back so that the pedaling is the same. The length of the chain will not change a thing. By changing the front sprocket to a smaller one you would have to pedal more to go the same amount of travel By changing the rear sprocket to a smaller one you would have to pedal less but would need a little more energy to start out, but would really move once you are rolling For a good example check out a ten speed or 5 speed bike and watch and feel the difference when you change gears before you do any changes. smaller sprocket means more energy because its much slower If you're planning on going uphills with a smaller sprocket, you're screwed. It would be really hard to, but if you go downhill all the time, getting a smaller sprocket would help. But you don't want to make it smaller, because it really takes more energy to move the bike. |
