The best way to figure out what would suit you best would be to simply go down to your local bike shop and see first hand. Any shop would be more than happy to help you see and touch the latest and the greatest models they have on the market.
Some big names you'll probably see or want to look for are GT, Mongoose, and Haro. Depending on what you want to do with your bike from there will further narrow your search.
Do you want to just straight BMX racing and tearing up the track? Look for Race models. Most manufacturers will also offer 24" Cruiser models as well. Bigger wheels (hence the 24" versus 20") but depending on how serious you want to take BMX racing they race in a different class with these. Or do you want to trail blaze and scout back lots for good places for jumps and big air when you aren't racing? Look at Dirt/Street models - generally a bit heavier, but beefier to take you from the track to flying high off a dirt ramp and anything in between. Or do you want to avoid the track and dirt, slap on some pegs and grind curbs and rails, and do flatland tricks till the early hours? If so then check out Freestyle models - Generally the heaviest but for a reason. It throws in wheels tough enough to handle more weight being put on them from any angle, additional brake assembly for a front brake, gyro so you don't have to worry able the brake cables preventing you from spinning your handlebars more than 360 degrees.
In the end it will all come down to how much you are willing to spend. You don't need a top of the line rig to start out with. Start small so you don't get bummed out when you continually eat it and spend the night picking dirt out of the crank, cause if your bike is still as shiney 3 months after you bought it as the day you brought it home, you ain't riding hard enough. Less money you spend intially on your new bike will also leave you some money to pick up some aftermarket parts you find you might want later on.
So in short - talk to the guys at the shop, they should be more than happy to help you find what will work best for you. Best of luck.
