Who makes (where do I buy) the fastest road bicycle wheels? |
Just for fun! This question can't be answered with just a brand name, but rather a scenerio described, plus the name of a wheelset that matches with that scenerio. . . Even if you choose one I don't like, I'll certainly vote for you if you match it up with its best possible use. No fair mentioning mine unless you can specifically state where and when it is the most helpful. The advertisements are off-line right now, so there's no way to look up the answer. ;) I'd much rather you talk about what you use your favorite wheels for (Race, Club, Triathlon, or Tour), on what quality of roads, with hills (or not!), with what rider weight--and then mention the brand and model of your favored wheels for this. Thank you!! Remember: Best purpose + Wheels to answer. I'm 185lbs when fit, 195 right now, and I'm old school ("you can't win if you don't finish") so I value "strong" over "light". But, my race wheels are the Neuvation r28 aeros. Light and aero enough, that they feel a couple of cogs faster than my 36h 3x training wheels, and strong enough that I have rode a few gravel roads without worry. If I had more cash I'd shell out for the c50 deep rim carbon tubies. But the r28's are fine for the local Tuesday crit. Didja see the recent study on tire rolling resistance vs pressure vs brand? Was very interesting, so my next speed upgrade will probably be tires. hi. zipp. or dt. for Triathlon or road. or have a good shop make some up for you. i was working in the bike game for over 35 years. wheels that are made up for you will run better and last a lot longer then ones you buy of the rack. cheers velomax tempest II carbon-sweet zipp 808 claim least resistance dude - you're annoying - if we're all so wrong - then just tell us what you think is the best and why ...I ride ksyriums - train on 'em and race on 'em all year long every day - never had a problem ever - east to get perfectly true - stay true - lightweight - stiff - not the best aero - but I can win on them What do I win? Fastest? That depends on more variables than you spell out. For instance: the fastest climbing wheels will be very very light, but those same wheels might be the slowest for a TT or on the track. The best way to find a wheel-set is to determine your purpose (as specifically as possible) and decide on a wheel system. Choose a manufacturer that offers the customer service that you need and the reputation you require; then find what they suggest to fit your need. For me it is the Mavic Kyserium ES (they are both light-but not too light- and stiff for fast cornering and reasonable acceleration while maintaining good life) As a bit of a response to your comment...."overstrung" is a matter of perspective, as is "weighty". For bigger guys-180lbs plus- a tough rim (one that will race cyclocross to crit or club ride) and not dent is a huge factor and therefore requires more material. And a front wheel that can handle a serious descent without under-steer also needs more beef. But if you want to run wheels that your friends will drool on and end up costing you more than you bike is worth go ahead and slap on whatever ultra-minimalist carbon whammies you want. Just be sure to be happy with crappy braking and that lovely steamroller sound where ever you go. |
