What is the best Touring Bicycle made or built ? |
I am planning to buy a touring bike for my trip to east coast of United States. Any suggestions on brand, accessories, or special options would be a plus. The most traveled human in history rides a funky old 3 speed so I wouldnt worry about the bike,it wont make or break the trip...I would concentrate on the bike I have ,and making it comfortable for hours in the saddle ..I also would say that especiially with touring less is more..the old addage when in doubt leave it out can be your prime directive..in other words more than gear or cycle I think a sucessfull and fun tour is more dependent on physical preperation and minimal kit... good luck Rivendell http://www.rivendellbicycles.com/html/bi... get a hybrid.. you sit more upright, without back soreness and easier on the body. the 700c wheels and tires are bit wider and support more weight. some hybrids have suspension frames to absorb shocks. There are many great ones out there. Go to a few bike shops and ask them and then test them out. Key things to look for are fitting you well, and that it has eyelets for racks and fenders, for both the front and rear. Depending on what kind of miles you are going to be riding, you might not want a hybrid. Those are great for shorter distances, but having drop bars (road style) bars gives you a greater number of hand positions so you can move around a bit on the bike to keep from getting as tired. You will also want to make sure the bike is sturdy and designed to handle the extra weight you will be carrying while touring. You will likely want something that can hold bigger tires than a typical road bike. Bigger tires will make the ride more comfortable and give you greater control on varying terrain. Plus you can get a little tread on the tire which is good if the road is wet or sandy or muddy. Get tires with some kind of flat prevention system as well. Many touring bikes come with cantilever brakes. I think this is to accomodate for wider tires, but they may also have more power, I am not sure. I am not sure what brands to get, I know Cannondale, Jamis, Bianchi, Specialized all make touring bikes. And there are some companies that specialize in them, like Rivendell, mentioned by someone else. www.crazyguyonabike.com www.adventurecycling.org http://www.phred.org/mailman/listinfo/to... plenty of people and info... buy an orbea they make just about the best bikes out there. |
