Anyone ride a HD tour bike and have lower back injury and find that style of bike ok to ride with the injury? |
have 3 herniated discs, currently ride a HD Heritage softail with apehangers & find that it's too painful to keep riding it much , ordered an HD Ultra Classic with backrest for me. I know it has better ride suspension, better seat to handle bar position, and have been wanting one for awhile to ride with wife more comfortably. Anyone out there have experience with this scenario? I had a bulging disc with some perm. damage in L4, L5 area, lower back. I ride on the back and have found anything with the Glide back end is very comfortable. Rode on an '06 Street Bob about 350 miles and only the butt was sore after. Recently rode about 480 miles one way on the back of a Wide Glide with a seat similar to a recliner and could have gone another 400 miles! But I have also done Pilates since my back injury which stretches & strengthens your core muscles. Get a beginners Pilates video, learn a few stretching/strengthening exercises and do this b4 & after a long ride. I guarantee you will feel much better overall. Also, the best medicine is a comfy chick as your back rest!! Source(s): Riding, living life! I have 3 bikes, (touring Valkyrie w/backrest, chopper style Yamaha, & sport Buell). I also have a problem with sciatica and a herniated disc. The Valkyrie definitely is the one that least agravates my back. It's a combination of better suspension, better seat to handle bar position, and better leg position. If your herniated discs are severe, I think any bike would compound the problem. But when you have the urge to get out on the road, the pain is a bit more tolerable. Ride safe and enjoy! Why not ask your PT to assist you in finding what the best position for "long period immobility" would be, and then rework whatever bike you have to fit those specs. 2 things you're doing will relieve a LOT of your pain while riding. Getting rid of the apehangers, and adding the backrest. The third thing is getting rid of that soft tail. Dyna and FLH suspension are much more kind to your back, so that's 3 things that'll give you much improved support for your back, hence you'll feel better. Right now, you are putting an awful lot of strain on your back with those bars and lack of back support. You'll probably feel like you have a new lease on riding. Good luck! |
